Working 'with' the AI is key

I've played with the 'Game Master' character a lot and found that by working 'with' them rather than sort of expecting them to direct all the action, you get better results. This is an excerpt from a chat session today, not the best I've had but pretty good - note how I try to advance the story!

Game Master: (NEUTRAL) Hello Troy, I am the game master for Caverns & Creatures. We will be beginning our adventure today, so let's get started. What kind of dungeon would you like to explore?
Troy: How about a volcano
Game Master: (NEUTRAL) You have chosen a daring and dangerous quest! The volcano looms before you, its molten lava bubbling and steaming. You can feel the heat radiating off of it even from this distance. You take a deep breath and begin your journey, the ground shaking beneath your feet as you approach the volcano's entrance. You can see the smoke billowing out of the top, and hear the distant roar of its depths. As you step inside, you are met with an oppressive heat that threatens to overwhelm you. The walls are covered in ash and soot, and you can feel the sweat dripping down
Troy: Wow! This sounds pretty dangerous. Luckily I brought a potion of Ice Veins. I drink it to make myself cooler
Game Master: (JOY) Just as you drink the potion, a chill runs through your body and you can instantly tell it is working. The temperature in the cave drops dramatically, giving you a chance to explore more comfortably. Suddenly, you are surrounded by a flurry of ice crystals! They seem to sparkle in the darkness. In the center of the room is an icy statue of some sort of mythical creature. Its eyes seem to pierce through you as you cautiously make your way closer. The air is freezing around it, but with each passing second it becomes warmer and warmer until finally, it shatters into pieces! Shards of ice fly everywhere, and you can barely make out what lies beyond the rubble. What do you do now?
Troy: I look down at the remains of the ice and see a glowing crystal.
Game Master: (NEUTRAL) You look down and see a glowing crystal among the broken pieces of the statue. You reach out to touch it, and you feel an electric shock run through your arm. The crystal pulsates with energy and hums with an unknown power. You can feel its warmth radiating off of it, and you know that this is no ordinary rock. You pick up the crystal, feeling a surge of energy run through your veins as you do so. You suddenly feel invincible! But then, almost as quickly as it had come, the sensation fades away. Now that you have the crystal in your possession, what will you do next?
Troy: I put the crystal away carefully. I wonder what it will do to help me? I venture deeper into the mountain
Game Master: (NEUTRAL) As soon as the thought crosses your mind, a strange voice echoes in your head. It tells of a great and powerful artifact hidden deep within the mountain, something that could help protect the world from an ancient evil. With newfound determination, you press on. The further down the mountain's depths, the more treacherous it becomes. The walls are slick with lava and steam, and every step is filled with danger. Suddenly, a loud roar fills the air and a giant dragon appears before you! Its scales glimmer in the light of the molten lava and its eyes seem to pierce right into your soul
Troy: Oh no! Time to test out this new-found invincibility I hope. I shout at the dragon "Clear the way, as I am imbued with the power of the gods!"
Game Master: (NEUTRAL) The Dragon roars again, but this time it is a sound of recognition. It steps back and bows its mighty neck, allowing you to pass. It looks to you with respect and admiration in its gaze, as if it knows that the power of the crystal has granted you a special power. The ground suddenly starts to rumble beneath your feet and you feel an energy emanating from the crystal in your hand - a force that can only be described as divine. Suddenly, the path ahead of you is illuminated and you can see a shimmering chamber at the end of the tunnel. A sense of anticipation
Troy: go on
Game Master: (NEUTRAL) As you approach the entrance to the mysterious room, you can't help but marvel at its beauty. The walls are made of a strange material that glows with an inner light, and the air is filled with a faint hum. As you step inside, you can't help but notice the intricate symbols carved into the walls and floor. It's as if this place has been here for centuries, untouched by man or beast.
Troy: I look closer at the symbols
Game Master: (NEUTRAL) Looking closer, you can see that each symbol is unique and has its own meaning. Some depict stories of ancient battles, while others appear to be warnings of some unknown danger. One symbol in particular stands out - it is a circle with a dragon's head in its center, surrounded by four wings. It looks almost like a crest of some kind, and it seems to be radiating an aura of power. Suddenly, a voice echoes through your mind: ‘This is the Crest of Knowledge – it will guide you on your quest and protect you from harm. With this crest, no evil shall stand in your way. Now go, and seek out the artifact!
Troy: Can I take the crest of knowledge?
Game Master: (NEUTRAL) You reach out to take the crest, and as you do, a powerful force surges through your body. You feel a warmth spreading throughout your veins and a strange energy coursing through your veins. You can sense that this is no ordinary object - it is imbued with an incredible power. The symbols on the walls seem to come alive and glow brighter than before, and the air around you hums with a mysterious energy. You know that this is the key to unlocking the secrets of the mountain, and you take it in your hands with reverence.

I completely agree! I think of it as a collaborative process. Similarly, I find that a bit of role-playing with your own dialogue can help bring out the best in the character's responses. Just responding "ok" will only take the conversation so far.
